What is Elo Rating?

Originally designed for chess, the Elo system measures relative skill. Every team starts at 1500. After each game, points transfer from loser to winner. Beating a strong team gains more points than beating a weak one. Over many games, ratings converge to true strength.

K-Factor Explained

The K-factor controls how much a single game moves the rating. Higher K (e.g. 30-40) means ratings react quickly to new results, good for short seasons or volatile sports. Lower K (e.g. 15-20) smooths out noise, better for long seasons. NFL typically uses K=20, NBA K=30.

Home Advantage in Elo

Home teams win ~57% in the NFL and ~60% in the NBA. Elo handles this by temporarily boosting the home team rating before computing expected score. The standard values (NFL 65, NBA 100 Elo points) were calibrated against decades of historical data.

Using Elo for Betting

Convert the Elo difference into a win probability, then compare to the sportsbook implied probability. If your model gives Team A a 60% chance but the book implies 52%, that is positive expected value. The spread conversion (Elo diff / ~25 for NFL) lets you compare directly to point spreads.
