Why this matters for spreads: Nearly 15% of NFL games land on a 3-point margin. Getting -2.5 vs. -3.5 is a massive difference. Similarly, landing on the right side of 7 captures another ~9% of outcomes. When taking a spread, always consider whether the line crosses a key number.

Historical Push Rates on Key Numbers

Spread & Totals Strategy Guide

How Point Spreads Work

A point spread is the bookmaker's predicted margin of victory. When a team is listed at -3.5, they are favored to win by 3.5 points. Betting on the favorite means they must win by more than the spread. Betting the underdog at +3.5 means they can lose by up to 3 points and you still win. The spread creates a roughly 50/50 proposition, which is why both sides are typically offered at -110 odds. The spread moves based on betting action and new information. If a key player is ruled out, you might see -7 move to -5.5. Understanding line movement and getting the best number is one of the most important skills in sports betting.

Understanding the Juice

The "juice" or "vig" (vigorish) is the commission the sportsbook charges. At standard -110 odds on both sides, you must wager $110 to win $100. This means you need to win 52.38% of your bets just to break even, not 50%. The juice is how books guarantee profit regardless of outcomes. Reduced juice books offer -105 or even -102 lines, dropping your break-even to 51.22%. Over thousands of bets, the difference between -110 and -105 is enormous: at 55% win rate on $100 bets, -110 juice yields +$500 per 1,000 bets, while -105 yields +$2,250. Shopping for the best line and lowest juice is the single most impactful thing a bettor can do for long-term profitability.

Key Numbers in NFL & NBA

In the NFL, scoring is structured around field goals (3) and touchdowns (7), creating clusters at key margins: 3 (14.8% of games), 7 (9.1%), 10 (6.1%), 6 (5.7%), and 14 (5.2%). A half-point on either side of 3 or 7 can swing outcomes for nearly a quarter of all games. This is why -3 to -3.5 is one of the biggest line differences in football. In the NBA, scoring is more continuous and granular (1-2 points per possession), so key numbers are less pronounced, but margins of 1-5 points occur in roughly 40% of games. For NBA totals, the market is liquid enough that half-points matter less than finding the right side.

Totals (Over/Under) Explained

A totals bet is a wager on the combined score of both teams. The book sets a line (e.g., 45.5 for an NFL game or 220.5 for an NBA game), and you bet whether the actual total goes over or under. Totals are influenced by pace, weather, injuries to key offensive players, and defensive matchups. Key insight: totals markets tend to be sharper than sides because they are easier to model. You only need to estimate total points, not the spread between teams. For NFL, games in cold/windy conditions, or between strong defensive teams, tend to go under. For NBA, pace and 3-point shooting trends are the strongest predictors. Totals at half-points (45.5, 220.5) eliminate pushes, while whole numbers like 44 or 221 carry push risk.
