Understanding Double Chance Betting
Everything you need to know about one of the safest soccer betting markets.
What is Double Chance?
Double chance is a soccer betting market that lets you cover two of three possible outcomes in a single bet. The three options are:
- 1X - Home win OR draw
- X2 - Draw OR away win
- 12 - Home win OR away win (no draw)
Because you're covering two outcomes instead of one, the odds are lower than a standard moneyline, but your win probability is significantly higher. This makes it a popular market for risk-averse bettors or when backing strong opinions about what won't happen (e.g., "the home team won't lose").
Calculating DC Probabilities
The fair probability of a double chance market is simply the sum of the two individual outcome probabilities:
- P(1X) = P(Home) + P(Draw)
- P(X2) = P(Draw) + P(Away)
- P(12) = P(Home) + P(Away)
To convert bookmaker odds to true probabilities, first calculate implied probabilities (1 / odds), then remove the overround by dividing each by the total implied probability sum. The fair DC odds are then 1 / P(DC).
For example: if true P(Home) = 50% and P(Draw) = 28%, then P(1X) = 78%, and fair 1X odds = 1 / 0.78 = 1.282.
Double Chance vs Moneyline
The key tradeoff with double chance vs moneyline betting:
| Aspect | Moneyline | Double Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Win probability | ~33-60% | ~55-85% |
| Odds range | 1.50 - 6.00+ | 1.05 - 2.20 |
| Best for | Higher payouts | Capital preservation |
Double chance is essentially a built-in hedge. You're paying a premium (lower odds) for the safety of covering an extra outcome. The value question is whether the bookmaker's DC price is fair relative to the component probabilities.
Best Uses for Double Chance
Double chance betting works best in specific scenarios:
- Cup matches: Underdogs often defend deep in knockout games. 1X on the underdog or X2 covers upsets and draws.
- Derby matches: Local derbies are unpredictable. DC reduces variance when form goes out the window.
- Accumulator legs: Use DC as "banker" legs in parlays to increase overall hit rate while keeping payout reasonable.
- Bankroll building: Consistent DC betting on researched matches can produce steady, low-variance returns.
- Backing the draw: If you fancy a draw, X2 or 1X provides insurance against being wrong about which team wins.
Avoid DC when the market is heavily juiced (overround > 8%) or when the implied DC probability already exceeds 80% - the odds become too short to justify the bet.
