What is House Edge?
The Long-Run Margin
The house edge is the mathematical advantage that a casino or gambling operator holds over the player on every bet. It is expressed as a percentage of each wager that the house expects to keep over the long run. For example, a house edge of 2% means that for every $100 wagered, the casino expects to profit $2 on average. The remaining $98 is returned to the player as winnings over time.
Expectation, Not Guarantee
It is important to understand that the house edge is a long-run statistical expectation, not a per-bet guarantee. In the short term, players can and do win. But over thousands or millions of bets, the mathematical edge ensures the house always profits. This is why casinos are profitable businesses. Every game they offer has a built-in margin in their favor.
Formula
House Edge = (True Odds Payout - Actual Payout) / True Odds Payout × 100House Edge = 100% - Return to Player (RTP)House Edge vs RTP
Two Sides of One Coin
House edge and Return to Player (RTP) are two sides of the same coin. If a game has a 3% house edge, it has a 97% RTP. RTP tells you what percentage of all money wagered is returned to players as winnings over time. A higher RTP means a lower house edge and better odds for the player.
Where Each Number Shows Up
Online slots typically display RTP prominently (usually 94-97%), while table game edges are calculated from the rules and pay tables. When choosing what to play, always check both numbers. A slot advertising 96.5% RTP has a 3.5% house edge, worse than blackjack basic strategy (0.5%) or baccarat banker (1.06%), but much better than American roulette (5.26%) or keno (25%+).
House Edge
- Expressed as a percentage of your bet
- Lower is better for the player
- Represents the casino's profit margin
- Used more often in table games and crypto
Return to Player (RTP)
- Expressed as a percentage returned to players
- Higher is better for the player
- Represents total player returns
- Used more often in slots and video poker
Why House Edge Matters
Bankroll Longevity
The house edge directly determines how long your bankroll will last. A game with a 1% edge will drain your bankroll roughly five times slower than a game with a 5% edge, assuming the same bet size and speed of play. This is why smart gamblers gravitate toward low-edge games like blackjack, baccarat, and craps pass line bets.
A 10x Difference
Consider this: if you play a game with a 5% house edge and bet $10 per round for 200 rounds, your expected loss is $100 (5% × $10 × 200). The same session on a 0.5% edge game would cost you only $10 in expected losses. That is a 10x difference in bankroll longevity, which translates directly to more entertainment and more chances to hit a winning streak.
Advantage Play
For serious players, edge matters even more. If you can find situations where the effective edge is near zero or slightly positive (through optimal strategy, promotions, or comp value) you can dramatically extend your play and even profit. This is the foundation of advantage play.
Crypto Casino Edges
Why Crypto Edges Are Low
Provably fair crypto casino games (Crash, Dice, Mines, Plinko, Limbo) typically offer some of the lowest house edges in the gambling industry, often just 1-3%. This is possible because crypto casinos have lower operating costs (no physical premises, fewer staff, lower regulatory overhead) and because blockchain-based provable fairness eliminates the need for expensive third-party auditing.
Transparent Mechanics
The house edge in crypto games is usually transparently built into the game mechanics. In Crash, for example, 1% of rounds are instant-bust rounds (the multiplier never exceeds 1x), giving the house a clean 1% edge. In Dice, the payout multiplier is calculated as (100 - houseEdge) / rollChance, so a 1% edge on a 50% roll gives 1.98x instead of 2.00x. This transparency is a major advantage over traditional slots, where the RNG and payout calculations are hidden.
Lower Edge, Not Lower Risk
However, lower edge does not mean lower risk. Crypto games are often played at much higher speed (hundreds of bets per minute with auto-betting), and many have high volatility. A 1% edge at 500 bets per minute adds up fast. Always consider both the edge and your total expected volume of play.
