What Are Outs?

Outs are the unseen cards remaining in the deck that will improve your hand to what is likely the best hand. For example, if you hold two hearts and two hearts appear on the flop, there are 9 remaining hearts in the deck, giving you 9 outs to complete your flush.

Accurately counting outs is the foundation of poker math. Every drawing decision you make at the table depends on knowing how many cards can help you.

Example You hold 7♥ 8♥ on a board of A♥ 3♥ K♠. Any of the remaining 9 hearts completes your flush = 9 outs.

The Rule of 2 and 4

This is the fastest mental math shortcut in poker. To estimate your probability of hitting:

  • On the flop (2 cards to come): Multiply outs by 4
  • On the turn (1 card to come): Multiply outs by 2

The Rule of 4 overestimates slightly for higher out counts, but stays within a few percentage points for 1-12 outs, accurate enough for real-time decisions.

Example You have a flush draw (9 outs) on the flop. 9 x 4 = 36% (exact: 35.0%). On the turn: 9 x 2 = 18% (exact: 19.6%). Close enough for the table.

Pot Odds vs Implied Odds

Pot odds tell you the ratio of the current pot to the cost of your call. If the pot is $100 and you must call $20, your pot odds are 5:1 (or about 16.7%). You need at least 16.7% equity to justify the call.

Implied odds factor in the additional money you expect to win on future streets if you hit your draw. This is crucial for hands like sets and straights where your opponent is likely to pay off a big bet when you make your hand.

Example Pot is $60, opponent bets $30, you have a gutshot (4 outs, ~8.7% on turn). Direct pot odds require 25% equity, a clear fold. But if you expect to win $200+ when you hit, implied odds make it a profitable call.

Counting Outs Correctly

Not all outs are created equal. Be aware of these common pitfalls:

  • Tainted outs: An out that completes your draw but gives an opponent an even better hand. For example, hitting a flush card that also pairs the board might give someone a full house.
  • Double-counting: If you have a flush draw AND a straight draw, don't count cards that complete both draws twice. A card like 10♥ might complete both, count it only once.
  • Backdoor draws: Needing runner-runner (two consecutive cards) dramatically reduces your equity. A backdoor flush is only about 4.2% from flop to river, not counted as standard outs.
  • Blockers: Cards in your opponent's range can reduce your effective outs. If you suspect they hold a card you need, subtract that out from your count.
Tip When in doubt, discount your outs by 1-2 to account for tainted outs. This builds a safety margin into your decisions and prevents overvaluing marginal draws.
