Understanding Betting Systems

Fibonacci

Based on the famous mathematical sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13...). After each loss, move one step forward in the sequence. After a win, move back two steps. The progression is gentler than Martingale, but can still escalate during long losing streaks.

mediumNegative Progression

D'Alembert

A linear progression system. Increase your bet by one unit after a loss, decrease by one unit after a win (never below the base bet). One of the safest negative progression systems because bet sizes grow slowly and linearly rather than exponentially.

Paroli

An anti-Martingale system: double your bet after each win, up to 3 consecutive wins, then reset. Any loss also resets to base bet. Designed to capitalize on winning streaks while limiting losses to the base bet during cold runs.

Labouchere

Also called the "cancellation system." Start with a number sequence (e.g., 1-2-3-4). Bet the sum of the first and last numbers. On a win, remove those numbers. On a loss, add the bet to the end. Goal is to cancel all numbers. Can escalate rapidly on losing streaks.

1-3-2-6

A fixed positive progression: bet 1, 3, 2, then 6 units of your base bet. Advance one step on a win, reset to 1 unit on any loss or after completing the cycle. Maximum exposure is 2 units (the net of the full cycle if it fails at step 4). Very controlled risk.

The Hard Truth About Betting Systems

No betting system can overcome a negative house edge in the long run. This is a mathematical certainty, not an opinion. Every strategy listed above will produce a negative expected value when the game itself has a house edge. The Law of Large Numbers guarantees that over enough bets, your results will converge toward the mathematical expectation.

So why study betting systems at all? Because there is an important distinction between strategies that manage variance and strategies that try to beat the house. No system does the latter, but some do the former quite well. A good staking strategy can control session volatility, manage bankroll longevity, and set stop-loss boundaries, all of which matter for recreational players who want to extend their entertainment value.

Distribution vs Expected Value

The simulator above lets you see this in action. Run 500+ sessions and notice that the average profit/loss is always negative when win probability is below break-even. The distribution of outcomes changes dramatically between strategies, but the center of that distribution does not move. Fibonacci might bust less often than Labouchere, or Paroli might produce more modest wins than 1-3-2-6, but none of them shift the mathematical edge in your favor.
