How Parlays Work

The Parlay Multiplier

A parlay (also called an accumulator or multi-bet) combines two or more individual wagers into a single bet. All legs must win for the parlay to pay out. The appeal is obvious: the odds multiply together, producing significantly larger payouts than betting each leg individually. A two-leg parlay at -110 on each side pays roughly 2.6:1 instead of the near-even money you would get on each bet alone.

Why the Vig Compounds

The catch is that the house edge compounds with each additional leg. On a single -110 bet, the sportsbook takes about 4.5% vig. But on a four-leg parlay of -110 lines, the effective vig balloons to roughly 17-20%. This is because each leg’s individual overround multiplies together. The sportsbook does not need to add extra margin on parlays, the structure does it automatically. This is why sportsbooks love parlays and actively promote them.

Implied vs True Probability

Implied probability vs. true probability: The odds the sportsbook posts already include the vig, which inflates the implied probability of each outcome. For example, -110 on both sides of a coin flip implies each side has a 52.38% chance, totaling 104.76%, that extra 4.76% is the vig. The “true” no-vig probability would be 50% per side. When you parlay these inflated probabilities, the gap between what the book implies and what is actually likely grows with each leg. A 10-leg parlay can have an effective vig north of 40%.

Why Parlays Stay Popular

Why are parlays still popular? Because human beings overweight low-probability, high-reward outcomes, the same psychological bias that makes lotteries appealing. A $10 bet that could pay $5,000 is exciting in a way that a $10 bet returning $19 is not. Additionally, parlays are entertaining: you have a rooting interest in multiple games. Mathematically, however, parlays offer worse expected value than flat-betting each leg individually. The only scenario where a parlay makes sense is if you have a bankroll constraint and need to maximize potential payout from a small stake, accepting the significantly higher probability of losing your entire wager.

What Is a Parlay Bet?

A parlay, called an accumulator in the UK and a multi-bet in Australia, is a single wager that links two or more individual selections together. Every leg must win for the bet to pay out. If even one leg loses, the entire parlay is graded as a loss. The appeal is straightforward: because the odds compound multiplicatively, a small stake can produce a large payout. A $25 bet on a four-leg parlay at standard -110 juice pays roughly $300 instead of the $45 you would net from four individual $25 flat bets.

How Combined Odds Are Calculated

The math behind parlays is simple multiplication. Convert each leg to decimal odds, then multiply them together. For example, three legs at -110 American each convert to 1.909 decimal. The combined decimal odds are 1.909 × 1.909 × 1.909 = 6.966. A $100 wager at combined 6.966 returns $696.60 total ($596.60 profit). The implied probability of hitting all three is 1 / 6.966 = 14.35%. Each additional leg multiplies the combined decimal by the new leg's decimal, and divides the implied win probability further.

The Parlay Tax: Why Parlays Are Mathematically -EV

Here is the uncomfortable truth that sportsbooks would prefer you not think about: the vigorish (juice) on each leg compounds through the parlay. On a single -110 bet, the bookmaker's overround is about 4.55%. But in a parlay, each leg's vig multiplies rather than adds. A two-leg parlay at -110/-110 has an effective house edge of roughly 9%, a four-leg parlay climbs to ~18%, and an eight-leg parlay can exceed 35%. The sportsbook does not need to add extra margin on parlays, the mathematical structure does it automatically. This is why every sportsbook in the world aggressively promotes parlay betting in their marketing.

When Parlays Make Strategic Sense

Despite the math working against you, there are legitimate strategic uses for parlays. Correlated parlays are the biggest edge: if you believe a team will dominate, parlaying the moneyline with the "over" on total points captures a correlation the book prices independently. Some sportsbooks have closed this loophole with same-game parlay pricing, but not all markets are efficiently correlated. Free bet conversion is another strong use case. When a sportsbook gives you a $500 free bet, hedging it through a parlay structure can convert 70-80% of the free bet into guaranteed cash, far better than letting it ride on a single outcome. Finally, entertainment value is real. If your goal is to maximize excitement per dollar wagered rather than expected value per dollar, a small-stake parlay delivers more sweat per unit of risk than flat bets.
