Understanding System Bets

What Are System Bets?

A system bet is a combination wager that covers multiple selections across different bet types (singles, doubles, trebles, etc.). Unlike an accumulator where all legs must win, system bets generate returns even if one or more selections lose. The trade-off is a higher total stake since you are placing multiple bets simultaneously. Each sub-bet within the system is treated as an independent wager at your chosen unit stake.

System Types Explained

Trixie (3 sel): 4 bets, 3 doubles + 1 treble. Needs 2+ winners for a return. Patent (3 sel): 7 bets, adds 3 singles, so 1 winner guarantees a return. Yankee (4 sel): 11 bets, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, 1 four-fold. Lucky 15 (4 sel): 15 bets, Yankee + 4 singles. Canadian (5 sel): 26 bets. Heinz (6 sel): 57 bets. Super Heinz (7 sel): 120 bets. Goliath (8 sel): 247 bets. "Lucky" variants always include singles.

When to Use Systems

System bets make sense when you have moderate confidence in multiple selections but want insurance against one or two losing. They are popular in horse racing and football accumulators. The "Lucky" variants (Lucky 15, Lucky 31, Lucky 63) include singles, guaranteeing some return from a single winner. Systems work best at higher odds. At short prices, the returns from partial winners often do not cover the increased total stake compared to a straight accumulator.

Systems vs Straight Accas

A straight accumulator is the highest-risk, highest-reward option: all selections must win, but the stake is just one unit. A system bet covers every combination, so the stake is much higher (e.g., 247x for a Goliath), but you get returns from partial winners. Mathematically, the expected value of both is negative due to the bookmaker margin. The choice depends on your risk appetite: accumulators for lottery-style shots, systems for more consistent (but smaller) returns when you hit 70-80% of your picks.
