Baccarat road maps are visual recording systems used in casinos worldwide to display the history of shoe results. They originated in Macau and have become standard at baccarat tables globally. There are five roads: the Bead Road (raw results), the Big Road (the primary pattern display), and three derived roads (Big Eye Boy, Small Road, Cockroach Pig).

Players use these roads to identify patterns such as streaks (long runs of Banker or Player), choppy shoes (alternating results), and trends. While the roads do not change the mathematical probabilities, they provide a structured way to visualize the shoe's history and help players follow their chosen betting strategies.

In a standard 8-deck shoe, approximately 80 hands are dealt. The expected distribution is roughly 45.86% Banker, 44.62% Player, and 9.52% Tie (before ties are removed from the road calculations).

The Big Road is the most important baccarat road. It tracks only Banker and Player results (ties are typically marked on the previous result but do not create new entries). Results fill a 6-row grid following these rules:

• Same winner: Continue down the current column
• Different winner: Move to the next column, start at row 1
• Column full (6 deep): "Dragon tail", continue right along row 6

The Big Road reveals the overall flow of the shoe at a glance. Long columns indicate streaks. Many short columns indicate a choppy shoe. Experienced players use the Big Road as the foundation for all derived road analysis.

The three derived roads use a "look-back" algorithm applied to the Big Road. They do not track Banker/Player directly. Instead, they indicate whether the shoe is showing consistent patterns (red) or chaotic choppiness (blue).

• Big Eye Boy: Starts at column 2 of the Big Road. Compares each new entry to the entry 1 column back. Same row depth = red (consistent), different = blue (choppy).
• Small Road: Starts at column 3. Compares 2 columns back. Same principle: matching depth = red, mismatched = blue.
• Cockroach Pig: Starts at column 4. Compares 3 columns back. Uses slashes instead of circles for visual distinction.

When all three derived roads show mostly red, the shoe is highly predictable. When all show mostly blue, it is choppy. Mixed signals suggest a transitioning shoe.

The house edge in baccarat is fixed: 1.06% on Banker, 1.24% on Player, and 14.36% on Tie. No pattern-based system can overcome these mathematical facts. Each hand is dealt from the remaining cards in the shoe, and while card removal does create slight conditional probability shifts, these are far too small to exploit without card counting.

Road maps serve a legitimate purpose: they help players stay organized, follow a consistent strategy, and enjoy the game in a structured way. The danger comes from believing patterns are predictive. A "streak" of 8 Bankers does not make the 9th Banker more or less likely in any practically meaningful way.

The mathematically optimal strategy is simple: always bet Banker (lowest house edge) and never bet Tie (highest house edge). Road maps are a tracking tool, not a prediction system.
