What Is Card Counting?

Card counting tracks the ratio of high to low cards remaining in the shoe. When more high cards remain, the player has an advantage. The running count changes with each card dealt according to the system's value assignments. This is not illegal, but casinos may ask counters to leave.

Running Count vs True Count

The running count is the raw total from adding/subtracting card values. The true count divides the running count by the number of decks remaining, normalizing it for shoe size. True count determines your actual edge and bet sizing. A true count of +4 in a 6-deck game means a ~1.5% player advantage.

Bet Spreading

Bet spreading means varying your wager based on the count. At negative or zero counts you bet the table minimum. As the true count rises, you increase bets proportionally. A 1-12 spread is common: minimum bet at TC 0 or below, and 12x at TC +5. The key is looking natural to pit bosses while maximizing expected value.

Choosing a System

Hi-Lo is the gold standard for beginners: Level 1, balanced, and well-documented. More complex systems like Omega II or Zen Count offer slightly better performance but are harder to maintain under casino conditions. Start with Hi-Lo until you can count down a single deck in under 30 seconds, then consider upgrading.
