Understanding Craps
How Craps Works
Craps is a dice game with two phases. The come-out roll starts each round: rolling 7 or 11 ("natural") wins the Pass Line, while 2, 3, or 12 ("craps") loses it. Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) establishes the point.
Once a point is set, the shooter keeps rolling. If the point number appears again, Pass Line wins. If a 7 appears first ("seven-out"), Pass Line loses and the round ends. All other numbers during the point phase are irrelevant to the Pass Line bet but may resolve other wagers.
The game offers dozens of bet types with house edges ranging from 0% (free odds) to over 16% (Any 7). Smart players stick to Pass/Don't Pass with maximum odds behind them.
Best and Worst Bets
The best bets in craps are Pass Line (1.41%), Don't Pass (1.36%), Come (1.41%), Don't Come (1.36%), and Place 6/8 (1.52%). These have the lowest house edges of any table game bet in the casino.
The worst bets are the proposition bets in the center of the table: Any 7 (16.67%), Any Craps (11.11%), and Hardways (9-11%). These are one-roll or multi-roll bets with massive house advantages that grind your bankroll quickly.
- Rule of thumb: The more a bet pays, the worse the odds
- Pass + max odds reduces combined edge below 0.5%
- Avoid anything in the center of the table layout
The Free Odds Bet
The odds bet is the only bet in the casino with zero house edge. It pays at true mathematical odds, which means the casino makes no profit on it whatsoever.
After a point is established, you can place an odds bet behind your Pass Line (or Come) wager. The payout depends on the point number:
- 4 or 10: Pays 2:1 (true odds: 2 to 1 against)
- 5 or 9: Pays 3:2 (true odds: 3 to 2 against)
- 6 or 8: Pays 6:5 (true odds: 6 to 5 against)
Casinos limit odds bets (1x, 2x, 3-4-5x, 5x, 10x, or even 100x). The higher the allowed odds multiple, the lower the combined house edge on your total action.
Dice Probability Distribution
Two six-sided dice produce 36 possible combinations. The probability of each total:
The 7 is the most common result (6/36 = 16.67%), which is why the entire game revolves around it. This is also why Place 6 and Place 8 (each 5/36 = 13.89%) are considered good bets — they hit almost as often as 7.
